3 Southland Projects Recognized by Mid-Atlantic Construction Magazine
According to Mid-Atlantic Construction Magazine, “the jury for Mid-Atlantic Construction’s Best of 2008 awards program had no lack of candidates to choose from when selecting the region’s best projects”. In fact, Mid-Atlantic Construction magazine received the highest number of entries yet in the awards program’s history. Five independent judges carefully narrowed the field to 38 projects in 19 categories, representing the finest examples of design and construction in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania and the District of Columbia. When the selection process was complete, 3 of the projects that Southland worked on were recognized for their outstanding results.
The $236.4 million Baltimore Convention Center Hotel received an Award of Merit in the Hospitality category. Southland was responsible for the design and construction of the plumbing, mechanical systems, and controls for this 850,000 square foot project. The 757 room, fast track project began in February 2006 and was completed in August 2008.
Equinix Data Center received an Award of Merit in the Industrial category. Southland was responsible for the plumbing, HVAC refrigerant piping and sheet metal work for this $48 million project. The scope for this project included interior fit-out of an existing 10-year old 70,000-sq-ft warehouse and the addition of a 30,000 square foot annex building. Sixty computer room air-conditioning units cool the buildings through 3,000 linear feet of duct work. Crews placed more than 11 miles of conduit, 400 tons of steel and 95 miles of cable throughout the eight month schedule.
The Pentagon Memorial received a Project of the Year award in the Park / Site / Landscaping category. According to Mid-Atlantic Construction Magazine, “The Pentagon Memorial Family Steering committee, made up of the loved ones of the victims, asked the team to create a “memorial that translates this terrible tragedy into a place of solace, peace and healing.” Southland was the mechanical contractor of choice for this project and together with the rest of the team, “delivered a project that not only met that request of the committee, but also created an oasis that will celebrate patriotism and democracy for years to come”.
