Southland Energy Awarded Comprehensive Energy and Water Saving Upgrades at St. Anne’s-Belfield School

Southland Energy, a division of Southland Industries, has been awarded a series of upgrades and replacements at St. Anne’s – Belfield School in Charlottesville, Virginia. As the first project awarded under VirginiaSAVES, a new program designed to reduce the cost of qualified energy efficiency projects and provide low- or no-cost long term financing, the project is completely self-funding and aims to reduce the school’s carbon footprint by 28 percent.

Chaffey College is served by a central plant consisting of 1,200 tons of cooling capacity provided by two centrifugal chillers and 10,800 MBH of heating hot water capacity provided by six boilers. To improve operational efficiency and boost cooling and heating capacity, Chaffey commissioned an expansion of the central plant, which was developed under an plan/spec delivery method and executed by an experienced design team.

The concept of retrocommissioning is not new, but new emphasis and investments in energy efficiency are giving the process greater interest and adoption. One example brings this renewed attention into focus. In 2013, Southern California Edison and Southern California Gas funded a retrocommissioning engineering study to identify energy inefficiencies and related issues with mechanical system operation at the Science Building of Santiago Canyon College near Los Angeles.
