Southland Industries, one of the nation's largest design-build mechanical contracting firms, recently raised over $5,000 by holding an Annual Texas Hold 'Em Poker Tournament at two of its divisional offices. In both regions, the money was donated to a local charitable organization of the division's choice.

Southland's Southern California Division gave a total of $2,900 to the Golden West College Foundation in Huntington Beach, California. Incorporated in 1985, the Golden West College Foundation works to maintain projects such as the STAR Book Program, which provides textbooks to students with limited economic resources, and funding the Golden West College Veterans Resource Center, which supports returning veterans as they transition into education.

Contributing $2,100, Southland's Mid-Atlantic Division chose the USO of Metropolitan Washington (USO-Metro) as its tournament's beneficiary. USO-Metro is a nonprofit organization that is dedicated to "serving those who serve, and their families" in Washington, DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia. Nearly 5,000 devoted volunteers work to accomplish the organization's mission of lifting the spirits of America's troops and their families.

The additional money raised was used to pay out the first, second, and third place winners of the $100 and $50 tables at each tournament. However, some of the tournament winners, like Mid-Atlantic Division Leader Mike Miller and Senior Design Engineer Andrew Tech, chose to return all or a portion of their winnings back to the respective charitable organization.
