Dulles, VA

Southland Industries, one of the nation's largest MEP building systems experts providing engineering, construction, service and energy service solutions, was recently awarded the Purple Line addition to Washington DC’s metropolitan transportation system. In addition to Southland, the design-build team working for owner Maryland Transit Administration consists of M.C. Dean and Hensel Phelps.

Once completed, the Purple Line will provide a direct connection to the Metrorail red, green, and orange lines at Bethesda, Silver Spring, College Park, and New Carrollton. Spanning more than 200,000 square feet, Southland’s scope of work consists of mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and building automation services. The project consists of two operations and maintenance facilities serving the 16.2-mile light rail. Southland will also implement variable refrigerant systems and compressed air, lubrication, and other specialty systems.

With a goal of LEED Silver certification, the project’s design phase is currently underway and construction is scheduled to begin August 2017. Overall project completion is anticipated by 2021.
