Dulles, VA

Southland Industries, one of the nation's largest design-build mechanical contracting firms, was recently awarded the Marine Corps University Research Center Addition and Academic Instruction Facility project at Marine Corps Base Quantico. Merging two projects under a single contract, the project team consists of joint venture CDM Smith/Coakley Williams, AECOM, Athena Construction, and Southland Industries.

In addition to the combined 177,000 square feet of the classroom building and archival storage facility, the project also includes a 225,000 square foot remote, above ground garage. Southland will provide HVAC, plumbing, controls, and fire protection services and will partner with Athena Construction to perform a portion of the work. Adjoining the Gray Research Center, the Marine Corps University Research Center Addition will be used as a file storage facility to support the Archival and History Divisions and will require mechanical systems designed for stringent humidity control. As a new multi-story learning facility, the Marines Corps University Academic Instruction Facility's acoustic requirements will be rigorous as it will include state-of-the-art classrooms, training rooms, auditoriums, a kitchen area, and office space. Regarding the plumbing systems, the project will utilize water reclamation from storm water.

Currently in the design phase, the project team is working toward a goal of LEED Gold certification. Field construction is scheduled to begin in July 2013, and overall project completion is anticipated by October 2014.
