Southland Engineering, a division of Southland Industries, was recently awarded the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Building project located in Cleveland, Ohio. Leveraging its healthcare experience in an integrated project delivery (IPD) environment, practical engineering solutions, as well as building information modeling and modular construction expertise, Southland Engineering has formed a joint venture with local contractor, Relmec Mechanical, to execute the 377,000 square foot project. In addition to the Relmec/Southland joint venture, the design-assist project team includes Turner Construction, William Rawn Associates, and Stantec Architecture, Inc.
The six-story facility, which will include full basement and penthouse levels, will house the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Institute on the clinic’s main campus. By embracing a LEAN Construction philosophy throughout the design and construction phases, the project team will deliver a clinic that incorporates patient exam and infusion spaces, public lobby and waiting areas, patient support services, physician office areas, radiology and radiation oncology, as well as MEP equipment spaces.
Focusing on energy efficiency, the Cleveland Clinic Cancer Building design involves an efficient, energy-responsive HVAC system coupled with advanced building control systems to help reduce the building’s overall energy demand. Reduced lighting power densities, premium efficiency fans and pumps, and a high performance envelope will also aid in the project’s energy efficiency goals.
With a goal of LEED Silver, the project is currently in the design phase and expects construction to begin December 2014. Overall project completion is anticipated by February 2017.
