As schools across the region finalize their budgets, the outlook remains grim. Revenues continue to fall short of expenses creating budget gaps. Citing increased retirement, health-care, utility, and related operating costs, for many schools FY14-15 will require further cuts to core programs and curriculum.
FOR SCHOOLS, NO BUDGET RELIEF IN SIGHT
Since FY08-09, most educational facilities have taken an approach of gutting maintenance budgets, putting off repairs, and freezing the Capital Improvement Plan. In order to preserve as many teacher positions and related in-classroom resources as possible, facility related line-items have been cut to close budget gaps.
